Programa

O curso pretende apresentar as principais teses historiográficas de Frederick Jackson Turner, colocando ênfase nas interlocuções epistemológicas do autor com o debate intelectual do período, especialmente com as disciplinas da História e da Antropogeografia, na inserção de sua obra no contexto sócio-histórico dos EUA nas décadas entre 1880 e 1920 e nas críticas teóricas e políticas que o historiador sofreu na década de 1940.

Aula 1 (10/11) – A frontier thesis de Turner: premissas teóricas e seu papel no imaginário sobre a formação dos EUA.
Aula 2 (12/11) – As condições históricas de difusão e aceitação da tese de Turner: os EUA entre as décadas de 1880 e 1920.
Aula 3 (17/11) – As críticas à tese de Turner após a sua morte: o debate dos historiadores americanos a respeito do legado turneriano na década de 1940.
Aula 4 (19/11) – Turner e a Antropogeografia: a frontier thesis à luz de Ratzel e da interpretação geográfica da história americana de Ellen Semple.
